  In responce to Phil C's review about the Barbour jacket not fitting and not being offered a refund. Unfortunately it is our company's policy not to offer refunds and there is a very big sign above our till stating we will exchange or offer a credit note for any item bought in the shop. We realise that large muti-national companies now offer no quibble refunds but as a small family run independent shop we just cannot afford to do that. We do appologise if this causes some of our customer's a problem but we have been trading the same way for over 40 years. We look forward to seeing you in the shop in the near future.

  Beware! My wife and I have been regular customers up to now of this quaint old fashioned outdoor clothing shop and have even recommended it to friends and family. But on this occasion we came across an anomaly that you wouldn’t have expected, and it’s something that is not advertised either in the shop or on their webpage. On a day trip to Rye we went into the shop and bought a very smart Barbour jacket. As it was a warm day I could only try it on with the t-shirt that I was wearing. Unfortunately when we returned home and I tried it on with a jumper underneath. It became quickly apparent that either I was too large around the middle or it was a bit tight. Now as I didn’t have much hope of curing the former I thought I would attempt to sort out the latter. I went back to the Golden Fleece to see if a larger size of jacket would be better. Again, unfortunately the next larger size was no better fitting unless I could somehow lengthen my arms, and after trying several other jackets that were offered, the assistant and I both agreed that my shape and Barbour jackets would never be good bed fellows. Now this is where this old fashioned shop both surprised and disappointed me, as the shop had no jackets that would fit comfortably I asked if I could have a refund so that I may go elsewhere and buy a jacket from another company. The answer that came back was at odds with what you would have expected from an old family run business. They refused to give me a refund saying that it wasn’t their policy unless I had bought it online in which case they would give a refund. They did offer a credit note but as I had already explored all the options in the shop it would have been useless. It seems this old fashioned shop has inherited some of the worst aspects of a modern establishment without any of the benefits i.e. Having profit rather than customer satisfaction as a priority and offering a 0 days refund policy. So as the title suggests “Beware” if you buy direct from this shop. I would recommend either buying online in which case distance selling regulations apply or be very careful and think very hard before you buy and leave the shop as you won’t be told that your item can’t be returned until it’s too late.
